Empowering the next generation: ANS’s newest book focuses on careers in nuclear energy

A new career guide for the nuclear energy industry is now available: The Nuclear Empowered Workforce by Earnestine Johnson. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience across 16 nuclear facilities, Johnson offers a practical, insightful look into some of the many career paths available in commercial nuclear power. To mark the release, Johnson sat down with Nuclear News for a wide-ranging conversation about her career, her motivation for writing the book, and her advice for the next generation of nuclear professionals.

When Johnson began her career at engineering services company Stone & Webster, she entered a field still reeling from the effects of the Three Mile Island incident in 1979, nearly 15 years earlier. Her hiring cohort was the first group of new engineering graduates the company had brought on since TMI, a reflection of the industry-wide pause in nuclear construction. Her first long-term assignment—at the Millstone site in Waterford, Conn., helping resolve design issues stemming from TMI—marked the beginning of a long and varied career that spanned positions across the country.

This session will explore the many educational routes into the nuclear industry, from trade schools and certification programs to 2-year, 4-year, and graduate degrees, as well as continuing education opportunities.

We’ll examine common cost barriers—including tuition, fees, housing, travel, and time commitments—and highlight ways to help manage them. Participants will also gain insights into financial support options at each level, practical application tips, and employer assistance opportunities. A list of specific resources will be provided to help you take the next step in your nuclear education journey.

Speakers

Lori Barber

President, College of Eastern Idaho (CEI)

Lori Barber began her tenure as President at College of Eastern Idaho (CEI) on August 1, 2024. She held several administrative roles at CEI prior to the role of President. She started at CEI as Director of General Education and then became the inaugural Dean of General Education in 2018.

Barber became Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs in June of 2019. Her innovative strategies have been instrumental in steering the direction of institutional growth and building the framework on which CEI’s current academic and student affairs structure has been built.

Barber holds a Doctorate of Educational Leadership and Innovation from Arizona State University. Her master’s degree is in Interdisciplinary Studies in History and Anthropology from Idaho State University. She has been involved in education at the K-12 and post-secondary realms for over twenty-five years.

Barber profoundly believes in the community college mission and recognizes the power of education to create hope and transform lives. She has been married for 36 years and has two grown sons. Marshall is co-principal investigator or education outreach director on several U.S. Department of Energy-funded consortia. She teaches in the First-Year Engineering Program, developed & teaches an upper-level Energy Geographies course, co-directs the Study Abroad Program in Engineering and Social Sciences, and serves on the Working Council for the Women in Science & Engineering (WISE) Living & Learning Village.

Lisa Marshall is a member of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) Council of Advisers, sits on several of the NEA Global Forum on Nuclear Education, Science, Technology and Policy working groups, and chairs the working group on Building a Pipeline of STEM Professionals.

Professor Marshall leads the NEO Research Group, a multi-university set of scholars focused on engagement initiatives to introduce, attract, and retain students in the STEM field with a focus on nuclear science & technology.

Craig Williamson

Director/COO, The South Carolina Universities Research and Education Foundation (SCUREF)

In 1998, Williamson established University-Laboratory Associates (ULA) where he developed and managed nuclear science and engineering education and research programs for the U.S. Department of Energy. In 2001, ULA merged with the South Carolina Universities Research and Education Foundation (SCUREF) to form a not-for-profit university consortium representing the research institutions in South Carolina. That same year, Williamson was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer for SCUREF.
