Remembering ANS member Gil Brown
Brown
The nuclear community is mourning the loss of Gilbert Brown, who passed away on July 11 at the age of 77 following a battle with cancer.
Brown, an American Nuclear Society Fellow and an ANS member for nearly 50 years, joined the faculty at Lowell Technological Institute—now the University of Massachusetts–Lowell—in 1973 and remained there for the rest of his career. He eventually became director of the UMass Lowell nuclear engineering program. After his retirement, he remained an emeritus professor at the university.
Sukesh Aghara, chair of the Nuclear Engineering Department Heads Organization, noted in an email to NEDHO members and others that “Gil was a relentless advocate for nuclear energy and a deeply respected member of our professional community. He was also a kind and generous friend—and one of the reasons I ended up at UMass Lowell. He served the university with great dedication. . . . Within NEDHO, Gil was a steady presence and served for many years as our treasurer. His contributions to nuclear engineering education and to this community will be dearly missed.”
ANS is committed to advancing careers in the growing nuclear industry by addressing workforce needs through targeted training and certification.
We offer a growing collection of certifications, training courses, and resources, each designed to cater to different specialties. Our programs equip nuclear professionals like you with the tools to expand your knowledge, advance your career, and navigate this unique industry.
Certified Nuclear Professional (CNP) Credential
The CNP is a new industry credential available to all nuclear professionals. Individuals seeking the CNP credential will need to meet eligibility requirements and pass the exam.
Nuclear 101 Course
If you’re transitioning from another industry or looking to expand your technical understanding, Nuclear 101 can get you up-to-speed and give you the foundational knowledge that will help you succeed in the field. The Nuclear 101 course is currently offered in person and will be available on-demand later this year!
Licensing & Regulation Course
This course is for industry professionals with existing nuclear knowledge, especially those in operations, engineering, communications, or oversight. The course examines the unique regulatory practices of the nuclear industry to help nuclear professionals prepare for roles requiring regulatory knowledge.
