Return of the HB Line at SRS
The Department of Energy is bringing the HB Line facility at the Savannah River Site back on line to recycle surplus plutonium and produce uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel for advanced reactors.
Restarting the facility will be a multiyear process and will yield opportunities for increased domestic production of isotopes with scientific and commercial value. The DOE said that once operational, the HB Line will accelerate the Office of Environmental Management’s plutonium disposition mission by 10 to 13 years while reducing the existing cost.
ANS Chicago-Great Lakes Local Section Event
December 5, 2024|7:00–8:00PM (8:00–9:00PM EST)
Available to All Users
On September 20, 2019, the Three Mile Island Unit 1 generating station shutdown for economic reasons, despite being one of the best performing plants on the grid. Exactly five years later, Constellation Energy Generation (CEG) announced the unit would re-start as the Crane Clean Energy Center (CCEC), including a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft to power Microsoft’s growing artificial intelligence (AI) and data center portfolio.
During an ANS Chicago-Great Lakes Local Section hybrid event, Trevor Orth, Plant Manager of Crane Clean Energy Center, and Darani Reddick, Director, Nuclear Regulatory Strategy & Policy, Constellation Energy Generation, LLC, discussed the technical aspects of the restart including the material condition and improvements, and touch on the still-evolving relicensing and regulatory environment.
