Session Chair:
Lauren Hughes (Deputy Director, Nuclear Energy Policy Initiative, Atlantic Council Global Energy Center)
Session Organizer:
For decades, the United States has utilized a once through fuel cycle for its nuclear reactor fleet despite several US companies exploring spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, licensing reprocessing plant designs with the Atomic Energy Commission, and beginning construction of commercial facilities. Today, there is growing interest in reconsidering the future of the nuclear fuel cycle. What economic, regulatory, legal, and policy considerations should be considered? The expert panelists will discuss used nuclear fuel recycling, innovations in recycling technologies, the drivers associated with future advanced nuclear technology as well as existing, and assess the challenges and opportunities of recycling used nuclear fuel.
