Can hydrogen be the transportation fuel in an otherwise nuclear economy?
Let’s face it: The global economy should be powered primarily by nuclear power. And it probably will by the end of this century, with a still-significant assist from renewables and hydro. Once nuclear systems are dominant, the costs come down to where gas is now; and when carbon emissions are reduced to a small portion of their present state, it will become obvious that most other sources are only good in niche settings. I mean, why use small modular reactors to load-follow when they can just produce that power instead of buffering it?

Improving equipment reliability is a key objective for most utility enterprise strategies. With the ongoing concerns of aging plant components, there is pressure to effectively spend maintenance dollars to maintain reliability goals. Digital modernization provides the opportunity to fundamentally re-evaluate the concept of maintenance for a nuclear facility through data governance and data democratization. One important tool is through effective use of Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics (PM&D) Centers. PM&D Centers provide a window into the condition of the plant, advanced warning for challenges to plant reliability, while supporting efforts to reduce maintenance costs. This can support condition-based maintenance (CBM) efforts by utilizing advanced technology, data analytics, and subject matter experts to assist in early issue identification, diagnosis, and elimination of equipment performance issues. Additionally, how we use plant data from modernization efforts can streamline analysis and support innovative technologies such as digital twins and advanced prognostics. This panel will explore current and future uses of PM&D center technology and how utilization of equipment monitoring and data analytics enhance the identification, diagnosis, and elimination of plant and equipment performance issues. Panelists will provide overview of their facility’s capabilities and examples of ‘catches’ as well as plans for effective use and dissemination of plant equipment data.
