Going Nuclear: Notes from the officially unofficial book tour
I work in the analytical labs at one of Europe’s oldest and largest nuclear sites: Sellafield, in northwestern England. I spend my days at the fume hood front, pipette in one hand and radiation probe in the other (and dosimeter pinned to my chest, of course). Outside the lab, I have a second job: I moonlight as a writer and public speaker. My new popular science book—Going Nuclear: How the Atom Will Save the World—came out last summer, and it feels like my life has been running at full power ever since.
Advanced Reactor Safety (ARS) SPeaker
Mr. Hastings leads teams responsible for licensing, risk-informed safety analysis and probabilistic risk assessment, quality assurance, nuclear safeguards and security, and government affairs, with a focus on establishing the regulatory basis for development and deployment of the Kairos Power high-temperature, fluoride salt-cooled reactor. Prior to joining Kairos Power, he consulted with advanced reactor developers and NGOs on the regulatory framework for advance reactors, risk-informed regulation and emergency planning, and source term development. He held previous positions with Generation mPower, Duke Energy, and NuStart.
Mr. Hastings is a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Advanced Reactor Working Group for the US Nuclear Industry Council, Chair of the Nuclear Energy Institute’s Advanced Reactor Regulatory Working Group, Vice Chair of the World Nuclear Association’s CORDEL Working Group, Chair of the CORDEL Small Modular Reactor Task Force, Chair of the US High-Temperature Reactor Technology Working Group, and appointed member of the US Chamber of Commerce Civil Nuclear Trade Advisory Committee, as well as a member of numerous industry steering committees. He earned his BS in nuclear engineering from NC State University and is a registered Professional Engineer in North and South Carolina.
