Going Nuclear: Notes from the officially unofficial book tour
I work in the analytical labs at one of Europe’s oldest and largest nuclear sites: Sellafield, in northwestern England. I spend my days at the fume hood front, pipette in one hand and radiation probe in the other (and dosimeter pinned to my chest, of course). Outside the lab, I have a second job: I moonlight as a writer and public speaker. My new popular science book—Going Nuclear: How the Atom Will Save the World—came out last summer, and it feels like my life has been running at full power ever since.

Are We on the Right Track?
The US Department of Energy (DOE) is pursuing a consent-based approach for spent nuclear fuel interim storage facilities. DOE already issued a request for information (RFI) asking feedback on the consent based siting process, removing barriers for meaningful participation, and the role of interim storage. DOE also announced a funding opportunity to provide resources to the interested communities to learn about the consent-based siting and management of spent nuclear fuel. Following the funding opportunity announcement, DOE recently announced $26 million in funding for groups of university, nonprofit, and private-sector partners that will work with communities interested in DOE’s community-centered approach to storing and disposing of spent nuclear fuel. This panel will discuss the status of DOE's consent-based siting related activities, past activities in this area, and provide insight on the path forward in the light of past experiences.
