From Capitol Hill: Nuclear is back, critical for America’s energy future
The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy convened its first hearing of the year, “American Energy Dominance: Dawn of the New Nuclear Era,” on January 7, where lawmakers and industry leaders discussed how nuclear energy can help meet surging electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence, data centers, advanced manufacturing, and national security needs.

Kaushik Banerjee is a Senior Technical Advisor at Idaho National Laboratory, where he supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s advanced nuclear fuel availability program. In this role, he leads efforts to ensure near-term allocations of High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) for advanced reactor demonstrations and to advance long-term strategies for building a resilient domestic market for both HALEU and Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU).
Kaushik has extensive experience across the nuclear fuel cycle, having previously held positions at Holtec International, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Idaho National Laboratory (INL). His work has spanned storage, transportation, and disposal of spent nuclear fuel, as well as the development of innovative data collection and analysis tools for spent fuel management.
He earned his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Kansas State University.
