Jefferson Lab awarded $8M for accelerator technology to enable transmutation
The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is leading research supported by two Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E) grants aimed at developing accelerator technology to enable nuclear waste recycling, decreasing the half-life of spent nuclear fuel.
Both grants, totaling $8.17 million in combined funding, were awarded through the Nuclear Energy Waste Transmutation Optimized Now (NEWTON) program, which aims to enable the transmutation of nuclear fuels by funding novel technologies for improving the performance of particle generation systems.
Nuclear Plant Instrumentation and Control & Human-Machine Interface Technology (NPIC&HMIT 2025)
Director / Principal Researcher, Advanced Instrumentation and Control Research Division
Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI)
Dr. Seo Ryong Koo is the Director of the Advanced Instrumentation and Control Research Division at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). He received his Ph.D. in Department of Nuclear Engineering from KAIST in 2005, specializing in the integrated environment for the development, verification and validation of safety-critical software.
Prior to joining KAERI in 2016, Dr. Koo served as a Team Leader in the Nuclear I&C Department at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. During his tenure, he led the localization of the nuclear Man-Machine Interface System (MMIS) and was responsible for the testing and verification of the instrumentation and control systems for Shin Hanul Units 1 and 2 - the first Korean nuclear power plants equipped with fully localized MMIS technology.
At KAERI, Dr. Koo plays a leading role in the development of intelligent nuclear instrumentation and control systems, nuclear autonomous operation and automation system design, as well as software verification and validation for nuclear MMIS. His contributions have been instrumental in advancing the reliability and automation of nuclear power plant control systems.
In 2020, Dr. Koo was honored with the Minister's Award for Excellence in AI Industry Development by the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea. He also served as a member of the Organizing Committee for ISOFIC 2024, an international conference dedicated to nuclear instrumentation and control technology.
