Investing in what comes next
Hash Hashemian
The 2026 ANS Annual Conference, “Net Out and Power Up,” brought the nuclear community together in Denver at the end of May. Over four days at the Sheraton Denver, we heard from exceptional speakers on the most consequential questions facing our field; how fusion and fission can complement each other, how to meet surging electricity demand, and what it takes to sustain American nuclear leadership. The embedded topicals on nuclear fuels and materials and on fusion energy added real technical depth. It was exactly the kind of gathering that reminds us why this community is so remarkable.
That energy and commitment is precisely what I want to channel as I close out my term as president of the American Nuclear Society. Because sustaining it year after year, conference after conference, requires more than enthusiasm. It requires investment.

This conference provides the advanced nuclear industry a venue to share their safety approaches and research. The Advanced Reactor Safety (ARS) conference, formerly entitled the International Topical Meeting on Advanced Reactor Safety and first held in 1994, is one of two conferences the Nuclear Installations Safety Division (NISD) has historically sponsored to support information sharing and networking across the safety community. ARS 2026 will be of interest to those working in both deterministic and probabilistic safety approaches for various applications. The meeting welcomes the submission of full-length technical papers, which will be peer reviewed and published as conference proceedings.
The recent acceleration in advanced reactor licensing efforts, both for non-light water designs and for light water designs, will naturally result in new and interesting safety-related research. This conference will provide the advanced nuclear industry a consistent venue to share their safety approaches and research. The meeting welcomes the submission of full length technical papers, which will be peer reviewed and published as conference proceedings.
