An introduction to key concepts and ideas vital to the practices and methodologies of reprocessing used nuclear fuel. This tutorial will briefly touch on pyroprocessing but focuses on aqueous reprocessing techniques. The roles of chemical speciation, oxidation states, and oxidation state control will be reviewed as it pertains to extraction chemistry, ion exchange chemistry, and precipitation. Self-radiolysis issues are raised and typical reactions, equipment, and controls for criticality safety during dissolution and head-end processes are discussed. Read more...

Nuclear in K-12 Education: Overview of ANS Toolkit & Reflections from Educators

ANS, in partnership with Discovery Education and the Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, has developed resources to help K-12 educators teach nuclear science and technology. This webinar will begin with an overview of the resources, followed by reflections and commentary from three educators of various grade levels on their experiences teaching nuclear science and thoughts about ANS’s instructional materials.
