Deep Space: The new frontier of radiation controls
In commercial nuclear power, there has always been a deliberate tension between the regulator and the utility owner. The regulator fundamentally exists to protect the worker, and the utility, to make a profit. It is a win-win balance.
From the U.S. nuclear industry has emerged a brilliantly successful occupational nuclear safety record—largely the result of an ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) process that has driven exposure rates down to what only a decade ago would have been considered unthinkable. In the U.S. nuclear industry, the system has accomplished an excellent, nearly seamless process that succeeds to the benefit of both employee and utility owner.
The Oak Ridge / Knoxville Section of the American Nuclear Society will provide annual scholarships (up to $1000 each) for up to two engineering students studying nuclear engineering and whose university’s physical location is within the following zip codes: 37000-37299, 37500-38399, 38500-38599, 40700-40999, 41500-41899, or 42000-42799. These zip codes include the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, and any other college or university that offers nuclear-related research or coursework.
Each applicant must be entering their junior or senior year next fall or be a graduate student next fall. You may apply for this scholarship by providing the information requested and by having at least two faculty members complete the recommendation forms.
Oak Ridge / Knoxville Local Section
A committee of the ANS Oak Ridge / Knoxville Local Section will select the award recipient. Discuss each topic fully and give specific examples. No specific weighting of each topic has been set for use in the application evaluation. All eligible students are strongly encouraged to apply.
