Division Spotlight
Accelerator Applications
The division was organized to promote the advancement of knowledge of the use of particle accelerator technologies for nuclear and other applications. It focuses on production of neutrons and other particles, utilization of these particles for scientific or industrial purposes, such as the production or destruction of radionuclides significant to energy, medicine, defense or other endeavors, as well as imaging and diagnostics.

College students help develop waste-measuring device at Hanford
A partnership between Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) and Washington State University has resulted in the development of a device to measure radioactive and chemical tank waste at the Hanford Site. WRPS is the contractor at Hanford for the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management.
The Sushil C. Jain Undergraduate Scholarship is proposed to be established in the 2023-2024 scholarship cycle, through a $45,000 contribution by the end of 2022. This contribution will allow the SPCC to award one (1) additional undergraduate scholarship each year. The scholarship will have the criteria and follow the same process as the current ANS General Undergraduate Scholarships, and will be open to ANS student members enrolled in a course of study relating to a degree in nuclear science or nuclear engineering at an accredited institution in the United States (or its territories).
Sushil c. Jain
Sushil C. Jain, started his career as an Assistant Engineer in 1977 with Toledo Edison Company. Sushil led the testing, nuclear engineering, safety analysis and PRA activities at Davis Besse. He also led the implementation of TMI-2 lessons learned and the 1985 complete loss of feedwater event at Davis Besse. Jain became the Director of Engineering and Director of Engineering and Services at Toledo Edison. In 1996, he joined Duquesne Light as the VP of Nuclear Services at Beaver Valley. In late 1999, Jain left Beaver Valley as the Senior VP of Nuclear Services to start Empyrean Services, providing engineering, management and technical consulting services to nuclear industry in US and Canada. Empyrean has been a premier provider of consulting services, delivering expert assistance in all facets of nuclear fuel cycle and operations including construction, startup, advanced reactor/SMR design and licensing, and nuclear plant decommissioning. In 2003, Jain started The Empyrean Group, which caters to the non-nuclear power industry.
Jain was the President and CEO of Empyrean until his retirement in May 2022. He has served as an executive consultant in the energy industry on national and international levels. He has also served as a chairman and member of several safety review and oversight boards. He has been a Lifetime member of ANS since 1994 and member of the US Nuclear Industry Council D&D Task Force. Sushil holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering and previously held a Professional Engineer license.
