WIPP: Lessons in transportation safety
As part of a future consent-based approach by the federal government to site new deep geologic repositories for nuclear waste, local communities and states that are considering hosting such facilities are sure to have many questions. Currently, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico is the only example of such a repository in operation, and it offers the opportunity for state and local officials to visit and judge for themselves the risks and benefits of hosting a similar facility. But its history can also provide lessons for these officials, particularly the political process leading up to the opening of WIPP, the safety of WIPP operations and transportation of waste from generator facilities to the site, and the economic impacts the project has had on the local area of Carlsbad, as well as the rest of the state of New Mexico.

A workshop Sponsored by the Diversity and Inclusion in ANS Committee and the U.S. Women in Nuclear
Come join the gamified, in-person workshop, Wednesday December 1 at 6:30 pm, centered around emotional intelligence in the workplace: Nuclear Family Feud! Similar to the popular game show, the Diversity and Inclusion in ANS Committee in collaboration with U.S. Women in Nuclear have gathered a number of fun and thought provoking questions and polled the ANS community. See how well you know our nuclear family with questions ranging from “What’s the best isotope” to “What’s the most common reason people leave nuclear.” No need to come with a team prepared- we will team everyone at the workshop! Please register so we can plan for food and beverage options accordingly. We will have a virtual version of this event on Thursday.
Survey says… we need your help! In preparation for Nuclear Family Feud, we need your help in providing responses on a wide range of topics from the color of electrons to workplace conflict. Then, tune in on Wednesday, December 1 (onsite), or Thursday, December 2 (virtual), where players will earn points based on your responses. Please provide your anonymous input by participating in this brief survey, whether you are planning to attend the Winter Meeting or not. Registration for Thursday’s virtual game is open to everyone. Survey participants can choose to enter a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card. Survey closes November 26.
