The Radiation Protection and Shielding Division is developing and promoting radiation protection and shielding aspects of nuclear science and technology — including interaction of nuclear radiation with materials and biological systems, instruments and techniques for the measurement of nuclear radiation fields, and radiation shield design and evaluation.

West Virginia Senate moves to end nuclear power ban
The West Virginia Senate voted 24–7 yesterday in favor of S.B. 4, which repeals sections of the state code banning the construction of nuclear power plants in West Virginia, according to an article in the Parkersburg News and Sentinel. The bill now heads to the House, which is considering a similar measure.

Southern Nuclear operates a total of six units for Alabama Power and Georgia Power at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant near Dothan, Ala.; the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant near Baxley, Ga., and the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Ga. Southern Nuclear is the licensee of two new nuclear units currently under construction at Plant Vogtle, which will be the first new nuclear units built in the United States in the last three decades.
