Radium sources yield cancer-fighting Ac-225 in IAEA program
The International Atomic Energy Agency has reported that, to date, 14 countries have made 14 transfers of disused radium to be recycled for use in advanced cancer treatments under the agency’s Global Radium-226 Management Initiative. Through this initiative, which was launched in 2021, legacy radium-226 from decades-old medical and industrial sources is used to produce actinium-225 radiopharmaceuticals, which have shown effectiveness in the treatment of patients with breast and prostate cancer and certain other cancers.

Over the last several years, the Advanced Research Projects Agency on Energy (ARPA-E) has sponsored several programs designed to improve various attributes of recycling used nuclear fuel (UNF) , such as improving waste management and reducing costs. This panel will highlight a select group of projects under ARPA-E’s Optimizing Nuclear Waste and Advanced Reactor Disposal Systems (ONWARDS) and Converting UNF Radioisotopes Into Energy (CURIE) programs that are producing results that could be impactful to future UNF recycling efforts. Join this panel to learn more about these programs and projects, potential future ARPA-E programs related to UNF, and discuss the future of UNF recycling in the U.S.
