Nuclear power plant proximity study sparks controversy
A study published in Nature Communications found a correlation between proximity to nuclear power plants and rates of cancer mortality.
The paper, “National Analysis of Cancer Mortality and Proximity to Nuclear Power Plants in the United States,” said that the study could not establish causation but also said that the researchers’ calculations support evidence of 115,586 “cancer deaths attributable to nuclear power plants proximity.”
Amir Bahadori, nuclear engineering program director at Kansas State University, cautioned that this study should not be read as proof that nuclear power plants cause cancer deaths.
Educational Session|Panel|Cost Reduction Opportunities
Monday, August 8, 2022|10:30AM–12:00PM EDT|Calusa 10
Track Organizer:
Tim Schlimpert (MCR Group)
Knowledge Manager:
Matthew Mairinger (OPG)
This session will take an in depth look at nuclear industry cost of operations including O&M, Capital, and Staffing over the past several years. Key areas of interest will be examined in more complete detail as costs will be divided for additional analysis by reactor design and market segments. The value of EUCG data contributions will be highlighted through lessons learned from the analyses and discussions. Key areas will include specific cost reduction opportunities and approaches for O&M, Capital and Staffing.
A panel discussion will evaluate the most probable factors contributing to changes in cost and staffing and best practices in achieving positive changes. Panelists will discuss proven methods for performance improvement will be assessed as well as new methods being implemented in the industry. The discussions will lead to recommendations for attaining improved performance in areas of interest.
