Researchers find new way to predict graphite failure in reactors
Graphite is a key component of traditional nuclear reactors—many of which are aging. Because graphite tends to swell and fail after lengthy exposure to radiation, it is essential to maintain its structural integrity over the lifetime of a plant.
Recently, a team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and other institutions reported a new and better way to evaluate the quality of the graphite. This new procedure could allow nuclear power plant operators to predict structural failure before it happens in a more accurate and less destructive way than is currently available.
The career fair will consist of two parts. The first part consists of a dedicated presentation time of one uninterrupted hour for each company, with time for Q&A at the end, and a virtual booth setup. During the presentation time, each company will present what they do in nuclear, career opportunities, etc. For the virtual booths, each company will have a zoom room where they can have intermittent staffed and unstaffed sessions.During the staffed periods, students may ask questions to the company representatives, but this will not necessarily be 1-on-1. During the unstaffed periods, attendees will only see the company cover slide with times for the next staffed period, and the cover slide will include information about the company itself. Each company may choose the frequencies of their staffed sessions, and may choose to staff their booth for the entire time, just the one hour session, or any frequency or length between these two options.
