Mohammad Modarres is the Nicole J. Kim Eminent Professor of Engineering at the University of Maryland and Director of the university’s Center for Risk and Reliability (CRR). A globally recognized authority in reliability and risk analysis, Dr. Modarres has shaped the field through decades of pioneering research and leadership. His scholarly work spans hundreds of publications, including textbooks and influential journal articles. For more than 45 years, Dr. Modarres has led cutting-edge research in probabilistic risk assessment, the physics of material failure, and nuclear safety supporting regulatory bodies, the nuclear industry, and the IAEA. His contributions have earned him the title of University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher. He is a life fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), a life fellow of IEEE, and a fellow of the Asia-Pacific AI Association (AAIA). Among his honors, he received the ANS Tommy Thompson Award, one of the field’s highest recognitions in nuclear safety. Dr. Modarres has earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic, MS degrees in both Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from MIT.
