Deep Space: The new frontier of radiation controls
In commercial nuclear power, there has always been a deliberate tension between the regulator and the utility owner. The regulator fundamentally exists to protect the worker, and the utility, to make a profit. It is a win-win balance.
From the U.S. nuclear industry has emerged a brilliantly successful occupational nuclear safety record—largely the result of an ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) process that has driven exposure rates down to what only a decade ago would have been considered unthinkable. In the U.S. nuclear industry, the system has accomplished an excellent, nearly seamless process that succeeds to the benefit of both employee and utility owner.

As part of the NCSD 2025 Conference, we invite you to an exclusive technical tour showcasing two of UT Austin’s premier research facilities:
Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) – Home to some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, TACC enables groundbreaking simulations and research in nuclear science, engineering, and beyond—like modeling black hole mergers and neutron star collisions.
UT TRIGA Reactor at NETL – Explore the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Lab (NETL), where the TRIGA reactor supports nuclear research, criticality safety studies, radiation detection, criticality safety experiments, and isotope production, this reactor plays a key role in training the next generation of nuclear engineers.
This tour offers an opportunity to see world-class facilities up close and explore potential collaborations.
