The opening plenary will reflect on the profound and lasting impact of the landmark Reactor Safety Study (WASH-1400), published in 1975. Widely regarded as a foundational milestone in the development of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA), WASH-1400 transformed nuclear safety analysis and inspired generations of research and practice. The session is dedicated to the memory of two of its principal architects, Norman Rasmussen and Saul Levine, and will feature reflections and insights from former contributors to the study, as well as students, colleagues, and experts who have built upon its legacy. Through personal memories and technical perspectives, the session will honor the study’s enduring influence on the PSA discipline.
