Reactor Physics
The division's objectives are to promote the advancement of knowledge and understanding of the fundamental physical phenomena characterizing nuclear reactors and other nuclear systems. The division encourages research and disseminates information through meetings and publications. Areas of technical interest include nuclear data, particle interactions and transport, reactor and nuclear systems analysis, methods, design, validation and operating experience and standards. The Wigner Award heads the awards program.

DOE-EM finishes cleanup of legacy Oak Ridge reactor lab site
The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management announced that the 30-foot-long, 37,600-pound reactor vessel from Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Low Intensity Test Reactor was shipped to EnergySolutions’ low-level radioactive waste facility in Clive, Utah, in late April.

Some physical and engineering aspects of a D-3He-fueled fusion power plant based on the pulsatory field-reversed configuration are considered. The results of preliminary technical and economical factors and optimization calculations are given. An increase in the “aneutronics factor” of such a reactor is shown to result in higher costs.
