This paper sets out some of the important elements of the Safety Management system in place for the Tritium Facility at AWE. It does not intend to cover all aspects; it gives some brief background information on the overall safety objectives, but concentrates more on local management issues and systems used to control the operation at the Facility level. Any modern Safety system for a Facility using a potentially hazardous and mobile species such as tritium must be designed to minimise its impact on the environment and to provide a safe working regime for its staff.
