Division Spotlight
Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology
Organized to promote the advancement of knowledge in the use of nuclear science and technologies in the aerospace application. Specialized nuclear-based technologies and applications are needed to advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace design, engineering and operations to explore planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond, plus enhance the safety of air travel, especially high speed air travel. Areas of interest will include but are not limited to the creation of nuclear-based power and propulsion systems, multifunctional materials to protect humans and electronic components from atmospheric, space, and nuclear power system radiation, human factor strategies for the safety and reliable operation of nuclear power and propulsion plants by non-specialized personnel and more.

Nicholas Tsoulfanidis—ANS member since 1969
As an undergraduate I studied physics at the University of Athens. I entered the university in 1955 after successfully passing a national exam (came up fourth in a field of about 700 candidates). Upon graduation and finishing my mandatory two-year military service, the plan was to teach physics either in a public high school or as a tutor for a private for-profit institution, preparing high school students for the national exam.

In order to enable a compact design of the next generation tokamak, 16 T is desired as the maximum magnetic field of its toroidal coil. In Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), for the development of the 16-T toroidal coil, the one-meter-size 16-T demonstration coil program is now being discussed for the next project. As the research and development work for the high field toroidal coil, the segment test program, the FC program and the PHOENIX program are in progress. These programs have showed excellent results and is now going toward the 16-T demonstration coil as the target.
