Who’s in the running for DOE Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses?
Today is the Department of Energy’s deadline for states to respond to a request for information on proposed Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. Issued on January 28, the RFI marks the first step toward potentially establishing voluntary federal-state partnerships designed to build a coherent, end-to-end nuclear fuel cycle strategy for the country, including waste management, according to the DOE.

Possible designs for future direct- and indirect-drive targets required for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) include resorcinol formaldehyde (R/F) foam shells. Depending on the experiment type, the shell dimensional specifications can range from 1.5- to 3.5-mm diameter with a 100- to 200-m wall. This paper will discuss the adjustments and modifications of the process developed for smaller-diameter ([approximately]900-m) OMEGA-scale R/F shells that were used to fabricate these higher-aspect-ratio NIF-scale shells.
