North American construction is back—smaller and faster—at OPG’s Darlington
“The nuclear renaissance is real here,” said Ontario Power Generation’s Subo Sinnathamby on May 8, one year to the day after OPG secured a final investment decision to build the first of four planned BWRX-300 reactors at its Darlington nuclear power plant, and shortly after the new reactor’s foundation was lifted into place. “We got our license to construct in April and our [final investment decision] in May, and we’ve been off to the races since.”

The Innovations in Nuclear Energy Research & Development Student Competition (INSC) recognizes published graduate and undergraduate students. Through the award process, the INSC provides winning students with opportunities to present their published work to the broader nuclear energy community. This webinar serves as an opportunity for students who were unable to present at the ANS Winter Conference to show their work to a wider audience.
This webinar features two students with published work in the nuclear fuel cycle technologies area. Claire Griesbach from the University of Wisconsin-Madison will present “Microstructural heterogeneity of the buffer layer of TRISO nuclear fuel particles” and Kyle Quillin from the University of Wisconsin-Madison will present “Microstructural and nanomechanical studies of PVD Cr coatings on SiC for LWR fuel cladding applications.”
The session will be moderated by Tyler Newitt, Innovative Nuclear Research Integration Office (INR-IO).
