A year in orbit: ISS deployment tests radiation detectors for future space missions
The predawn darkness on a cool Florida night was shattered by the ignition of nine Merlin engines on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The thrust of the engines shook the ground miles away. From a distance, the rocket appeared to slowly rise above the horizon. For the cargo onboard, the launch was anything but gentle, as the ignition of liquid oxygen generated more than 1.5 million pounds of force. After the rocket had been out of sight for several minutes, the booster dramatically returned to Earth with several sonic booms in a captivating show of engineering designed to make space travel less expensive and more sustainable.

Join us for an interactive webinar in which participants will be guided through the foundational principles of trauma-informed practice and their application within nuclear materials and engineering environments.
Andrew Hoffman will begin by defining trauma from both experiential and neuroscience perspectives—demonstrating how, after a traumatic event, neural-net weightings in our brains adapt into a persistent “survival mode,” making it difficult to return to baseline even when we’re safe.
Drawing on his own survivor’s perspective, Hoffman will then show how unaddressed trauma can manifest as emotional dysregulation, decreased focus, and impaired team dynamics. Attendees will learn practical strategies—such as trigger warnings, active listening, boundary setting, and simple grounding techniques (e.g., breathwork, the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory exercise)—to foster psychological safety, respect diverse cognitive and sensory experiences, and build trauma-informed research teams.
Whether you’re a group leader, HR professional, or bench scientist, you’ll leave with concrete tools to enhance validation, empathy, and well-being across your organization.
