NRC proposes changes to its rules on nuclear materials
In response to Executive Order 14300, “Ordering the Reform of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission,” the NRC is proposing sweeping changes to its rules governing the use of nuclear materials that are widely used in industry, medicine, and research. The changes would amend NRC regulations for the licensing of nuclear byproduct material, some source material, and some special nuclear material.
As published in the May 18 Federal Register, the NRC is seeking public comment on this proposed rule and draft interim guidance until July 2.

ANS hosted Curtiss-Wright for a Supplier Showcase webinar featuring a deep dive into the digital technologies transforming power uprate projects. Topics highlighted included Data Validation & Reconciliation (DVR)—a technology approved for MUR uprates—and how it improves data accuracy and supports uprate justification. Other topics discussed included best practices for using PEPSE, the industry-standard plant modeling and simulation software, to perform power uprate studies and assess plant performance impacts. This webinar also provided practical insights, case-style examples, and actionable approaches for applying these tools in real uprate projects.
Derek HornSr. Manager of Business Development, Curtiss-WrightDerek brings experience from a variety of power industries, including nuclear energy. He has extensive experience in thermal performance, with a strong focus on areas such as online performance monitoring, data validation and reconciliation (DVR), PEPSE modeling, cycle isolation, and life cycle management. In addition to his technical background, he also has valuable project management experience across these domains. Derek has also been actively involved with numerous regulatory required engineering programs such Inservice Testing and Inservice Inspection and continues to be an active member of two ASME international working groups (Sec. XI and O&M). Fun fact—Derek is trilingual! He’s fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and English.
