      Nuclear Criticality Safety

      Nuclear Criticality Safety

      NCSD provides communication among nuclear criticality safety professionals through the development of standards, the evolution of training methods and materials, the presentation of technical data and procedures, and the creation of specialty publications. In these ways, the division furthers the exchange of technical information on nuclear criticality safety with the ultimate goal of promoting the safe handling of fissionable materials outside reactors.

      Argonne creates new methodology for digital twins

      Hu

      Argonne National Laboratory has added a new twist to digital twin technology for research into nuclear energy. According to Rui Hu, a principal nuclear engineer at Argonne, “Our digital twin technology introduces a significant step toward understanding and managing advanced nuclear reactors, enabling us to predict and respond to changes with the required speed and accuracy.”

      The research of Hu and his colleagues, “Development of Whole System Digital Twins for Advanced Reactors: Leveraging Graph Neural Networks and SAM Simulations,” was published in the American Nuclear Society journal Nuclear Technology.

      Virtual representation: A digital twin technology is an accurate virtual representation of a complex system. It is updated with real-time data from sensors applied to the physical system, such as a nuclear reactor.

Consensus Committees

The American Nuclear Society currently supports eight consensus committees. A consensus committee is the balanced body that conducts the consensus ballot on proposed standards in order for them to become official, approved standards. Each consensus committee has a defined scope of activities. The eight ANS consensus committees are as follows:

  • Environmental and Siting Consensus Committee (ESCC)
  • Fuel, Waste, and Decommissioning Consensus Committee (FWDCC)
  • ANS/ASME Joint Committee on Nuclear Risk Management (JCNRM)
  • Large Light Water Reactor Consensus Committee (LLWRCC)
  • Nuclear Criticality Safety Consensus Committee (NCSCC)
  • Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Consensus Committee (NRNFCC)
  • Research and Advanced Reactors Consensus Committee (RARCC)
  • Safety and Radiological Analyses Consensus Committee (SRACC)
