NRC addresses NEPA proposed rule in public meeting
Changes that Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have labeled as significant could be coming to the agency’s environmental review regulations if its proposed rule on National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) procedures moves forward.
With notable changes potentially incoming—such as no longer requiring draft environmental impact statements and the addition of new categorical exclusions—NRC staff shared additional details on these and other proposals during a July 23 meeting on the NEPA proposed rule.

A voluntary, collaborative pathway to siting a complete domestic nuclear fuel cycle
The DOE's NLIC program is a step toward a more complete domestic nuclear fuel cycle — from uranium production and fuel fabrication to reactor operations and long-term management of used nuclear fuel. The program evaluates a range of approaches, including consolidated storage, recycling/reprocessing technologies, and eventual disposal.
For a host community, an NLIC can mean multigenerational job creation, sustained economic growth, and new investment in education and workforce development — all while capturing the full value of zero-carbon nuclear energy.
On July 28, 2026, DOE signed Memorandums of Understanding with the states of Idaho, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Utah to continue exploring the opportunity to become host sites.

ANS members are available to answer questions, brief officials, and take part in public meetings as an independent technical resource — on nuclear energy and radiation generally, and on the fuel cycle questions a campus raises specifically: used nuclear fuel storage, recycling and reprocessing, transportation, disposal, and the safeguards that apply to each.
ANS is a nonprofit society of the people who do this work — engineers, scientists, technologists, educators, and healthcare providers. When a question comes up in a public meeting, our members are there to answer it, plainly and on the record.
