Uranium Mining Remediation: Past, Present, and Future

Addressing the legacy of uranium mining and milling remains one of the nation’s most complex environmental and community challenges. This panel will provide updates on federal, state, tribal, and industry efforts to characterize, remediate, and monitor former uranium mine and mill sites across the western United States. Discussions will highlight lessons learned from ongoing cleanup projects, advances in site characterization, risk-informed remediation strategies, long-term stewardship, and community engagement. Panelists will also explore emerging technologies, including remote sensing, data analytics, waste minimization, resource recovery, and uranium-bearing material recycling initiatives that may improve cleanup effectiveness while supporting domestic critical mineral and nuclear fuel supply objectives.
