Westinghouse, Nordion, and PSEG team up to produce Co‑60 in the United States
This past January, Westinghouse Electric Company, Nordion, and PSEG Nuclear formalized agreements to implement newly developed cobalt-60 production technology at Units 1 and 2 of PSEG’s Salem nuclear power plant in New Jersey, with the Co-60 to be supplied to Nordion. Through an ongoing joint initiative, the companies aim to harness U.S. pressurized water reactors to produce a key medical isotope and build the first commercial-scale Co-60 production platform in the United States.
Advanced Reactor Safety (ARS 2026)
Technical Session|Panel|Sponsored by Design Assurance

Both the Licensing Modernization Project (LMP) and Reliability Integrity Management (RIM) call for establishing explicit targets for SSC reliability and capability with a view to satisfying high-level safety objectives, and then conducting numerous activities aimed at achieving and maintaining performance at (or better than) those target levels. This approach explicitly rationalizes inspection, testing, and monitoring of SSCs in terms of the high-level risk perspective within which the safety objectives are established. The proposed Panel will discuss what it takes to apply these approaches, including participation from advanced-reactor vendors who are either considering, or already engaged in, LMP, RIM, or both.
