ANS is committed to advancing, fostering, and promoting the development and application of nuclear sciences and technologies to benefit society.
Explore the many uses for nuclear science and its impact on energy, the environment, healthcare, food, and more.
Human Factors, Instrumentation & Controls
Improving task performance, system reliability, system and personnel safety, efficiency, and effectiveness are the division's main objectives. Its major areas of interest include task design, procedures, training, instrument and control layout and placement, stress control, anthropometrics, psychological input, and motivation.

The Sodium Reactor Experiment
In February 1957, construction was completed on the Sodium Reactor Experiment (SRE), a sodium-cooled, graphite-moderated reactor with an output of 20 MWt. The design of theSRE had begun three years earlier in 1954, and construction started in April 1955. On April 25, 1957, the reactor reached criticality, and the SRE operated until February 1964.

Built on top of the MOOSE Framework, which solves partial differential equations important to fuel performance via the finite element method (energy conservation, stress divergence, and species migration), BISON adds specific fuel constitutive and behavioral models designed to represent the response of fuel and cladding/structural layers in a variety of fuel designs and reactor types. This workshop will serve to introduce users to the BISON code system by building basic examples to help them get started with fuel performance analysis.
