American Nuclear Society condemns attack on UAE's Barakah nuclear power plant
Washington, D.C. — The American Nuclear Society (ANS) issued the following statement:
"The American Nuclear Society condemns today's drone attack on the outer perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates. The IAEA has confirmed that radiation levels are normal and no injuries have been reported. The safety systems performed as designed, a demonstration of the layered protections built into robust modern nuclear facilities. Incidents like this reinforce the importance of the IAEA's calls for maximum military restraint around nuclear power reactors, and of full adherence by all combatants to the IAEA's seven pillars for nuclear safety and security during armed conflict."
2024 ANS Student Conference
Dr. Kathryn Huff leads the Office of Nuclear Energy as the Assistant Secretary. Before joining the Department of Energy, she was a professor in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she led the Advanced Reactors and Fuel Cycles Research Group. She was previously a postdoctoral fellow in both the Nuclear Science and Security Consortium and the Berkeley Institute for Data Science at the University of California - Berkeley. She received her Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013 and her undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Chicago. Her research has focused on modeling and simulation of advanced nuclear reactors and fuel cycles.
