Deep Space: The new frontier of radiation controls
In commercial nuclear power, there has always been a deliberate tension between the regulator and the utility owner. The regulator fundamentally exists to protect the worker, and the utility, to make a profit. It is a win-win balance.
From the U.S. nuclear industry has emerged a brilliantly successful occupational nuclear safety record—largely the result of an ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) process that has driven exposure rates down to what only a decade ago would have been considered unthinkable. In the U.S. nuclear industry, the system has accomplished an excellent, nearly seamless process that succeeds to the benefit of both employee and utility owner.

Dr. Ishita Trivedi is a computational scientist in the Advanced Reactor Design and Technology division at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Her expertise encompasses multi-physics design and analysis of advanced nuclear technology concepts, such as microreactors, fusion technology, digital twin technology, and nuclear thermal propulsion rockets. Additionally, she is proficient in application of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification methods and optimization techniques.
Before joining INL, Dr. Trivedi earned her PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the North Carolina State University, specializing in advanced reactor modeling and simulation. She also holds an M.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering from the North Carolina State University and a B.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.
Within the American Nuclear Society (ANS), Dr. Trivedi serves as the Chair of the Young Members Group (YMG) and the Education Training Workforce Development (ETWD) divisions, and she is an active member on the executive committee for the Reactor Physics Division (RPD). As a passionate advocate for early career professionals, she currently chairs the Early Career Researchers Association (ECRA) at INL.
Outside of her professional achievements, Dr. Trivedi enjoys baking, playing the piano, and engaging in outdoor activities such as backpacking and skiing.
