Who We Are

President - Subash Sharma (Missouri University of Science and Technology)

  • The honor society was established in 1979 by the ANS Education, Training, and Workforce Development Division (ETWDD).
  • National Officers, appointed by ETWDD's Board of Directors, administer the affairs of the honor society in accordance with the Constitution.
  • Only institutions with an established ANS student section may be authorized to host a local Alpha Nu Sigma National Honor Society chapter.
  • Faculty Advisors must be familiar with and perform their duties in accordance with the ANSNHS constitution. Faculty Advisors assist their local chapters as needed, including in the process of identifying qualified candidates for membership and submitting candidate information for consideration for membership.

Induction Process

Approval of new candidates for membership is done at the National Officers level, in accordance with the Constitution. All four of the following steps must be completed before a candidate becomes an official member of ANSHS:

  • Faculty Advisors at Local Chapters determine which students meet the criteria established in the Constitution and forward this list of potential candidates to the Local Chapter's nominating committee (which is chaired by the Local Chapter's President).
  • The Local Chapter's nominating committee votes on whether to admit the nominees to the Local Chapter. Membership shall be offered to the nominees following approval by a majority of the current local membership of the Society, based only upon the selection criteria specified in Article VI and the objectives of the Alpha Nu Sigma National Honor Society as stated in Article II. The Faculty Advisor will extend an invitation to apply for membership to each candidate following a successful vote.
  • Faculty Advisors then submit the Candidate Information for New Members form and the Certificate, Pin, and Honor Cord Order form to the Secretary . Purchase of a certificate ($15) is mandatory since this is the induction fee. Pin and Honor cord purchases are optional.
  • Upon candidate approval by National Officers, a Certificate is issued and transmitted to the Faculty Advisor by the Secretary. An induction ceremony organized at the university level may then be performed.

Recruitment and Enrollment

Chapters are responsible for identifying and recruiting new members and submitting the appropriate forms to ANS. Below are helpful best practices to get started.

  • Determine which students are eligible for Alpha Nu Sigma by reviewing the requirements for membership. The Registrar's Office or your department should be able to provide a list of students who meet the membership requirements (top quarter – Juniors / top third – Seniors / top third - Graduate).
  • Send a letter of invitation/email and application for membership, and information about Alpha Nu Sigma to eligible students. OR, consider holding an informational meeting to introduce potential new members to Alpha Nu Sigma. Hand out information and applications during the meeting.
  • Establish a deadline for students to return their application and a one-time $15 induction fee. ANS accepts check or credit card payments. If your chapter is unable to pay by credit card, follow the instructions to enroll new members and send payment by university or chapter check. Your chapter can either send the checks from each individual student or opt to have the student submit payment to the chapter and submit one check from the university or chapter.
  • Faculty Advisors must complete the Candidate Information for Certificates of Membership form.
  • Membership certificates, pins, and cords are mailed to the Faculty Advisor within 8-10 business days of receipt of payment to the ANS office. Certificates and pins are mailed First Class to the Faculty Advisor at the school address. Certificates need to be signed by the Faculty Advisor.
  • Plan an induction ceremony for new members. Each chapter is required to have at least one induction per year to remain active.
