Idaho site marks 30 years of cleanup
When the Department of Energy, the state of Idaho, and the Environmental Protection Agency signed a federal facility agreement and consent order in December 1991, the agencies outlined a plan to investigate and clean up, if necessary, more than 500 individual waste areas within the 890-square-mile Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Site, which was established in 1949 to design, build, and test nuclear reactors.
The Special Committee on Government Relations was formed to keep abreast of US federal government activity in terms of nuclear science and technology in order to take a proactive approach in providing information to federal government officials and agencies as well as mobilizing members for specific initiatives.
The Special Committee on Government Relations' work is based on the belief that the US federal government should promote a balanced portfolio of energy options that is stable, secure and affordable, with minimal impact on the environment. This portfolio should include a robust program of nuclear energy research, development and demonstration to ensure that nuclear power remains a viable resource to meet future energy needs.
