The Nuclear Historic Landmark Award identifies and memorializes sites or facilities where outstanding physical accomplishments took place that were instrumental in the advancement and implementation of nuclear technology and in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The landmark designation will be awarded only in response to nominations sent to the Honors and Awards Committee. Each nomination will be evaluated separately. The historic event or activity must have (a) successfully provided an essential contribution to, or basis for, subsequent peaceful application of nuclear technology or nuclear energy, and (b) been first-of-a-kind or provided a significant new departure. Sites or facilities to be nominated should have been placed in service at least 20 years before nomination.
The designation of these sites is symbolized by an inscribed bronze plaque for display at or near the original sites. The plaque is presented by an official ANS representative at an appropriate ceremony. A citation letter is also presented for broader recognition within the Society.
Nominations are made on a form available from ANS headquarters and from this web site. ANS members, professional divisions, or local sections may submit nominations, and they should be addressed to the chair of the ANS Honors and Awards Committee. The nominations should contain a clear identification of the project and/or facility by its correct name and an appropriate short statement of the project and/or facility accompanied by a lengthy explanation of its place in nuclear history.
Nominations are evaluated by the Honors and Awards Committee, and its favorable recommendations are forwarded to the ANS Board of Directors for approval. Newly designated Nuclear Historic Landmark sites are recognized at the ANS Winter Meeting.
Eight sets of the nomination form and supporting documents should be received at ANS headquarters before June 1.
