Argonne’s METL gears up to test more sodium fast reactor components
Argonne National Laboratory has successfully swapped out an aging cold trap in the sodium test loop called METL (Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop), the Department of Energy announced April 23. The upgrade is the first of its kind in the United States in more than 30 years, according to the DOE, and will help test components and operations for the sodium-cooled fast reactors being developed now.

Proceedings | Nuclear Plant Instrumentation, Control, and Human-Machine Interface Technolgies (NPIC&HMIT 2019) | Orlando, FL, February 9-14, 2019 | Pages 736-746
A substantial number of nuclear power plants in the world are still operating with analog safety classified I&C systems. Their modernization, often necessary to obtain an extended operating license, in particular for the Neutron Instrumentation Systems (NIS), is crucial to ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant, but their upgrade to digital is often seen as complex. However, Rolls-Royce Civil Nuclear has successfully deployed its digital technology for NIS modernization projects around the world, and will soon start an ambitious project in France. The successful completion of all these projects shows that with proper process, technology and requirements analysis, such modernizations toward Digital can be achieved successfully within budgets and schedule. This paper gives an overview of two particular NIS modernization projects: • The successful I&C refurbishment at LingAo, China in 2014 • The future modernization of the 900MW French fleet, starting 2019 Although both projects are carried out on the same type of reactors, they are varying on many other aspects such the number of units modernized, the scope, integration with other systems and different regulatory requirements. Thanks to a large experience dealing with major and very different projects, subsequent modernizations can be achieved smoothly, especially regarding qualification and licensing, systems integration with older systems and time constraints. As a result, the best solutions, activities and business practices for the successful modernization of a Westinghouse-type PWR’s Neutron Instrumentation System will be highlighted, based on Rolls-Royce previous accomplishments and future projects using its Spinline digital safety platform for NIS.
