The importance of reliable basic nuclear data, problem-specific neutron spectra, and multidimensional computing models for use in the evaluation of thermal power reactor properties is stressed. Examples are the cycle length, the local distribution of fuel burnup and plutonium buildup, and the void characteristics of an advanced pressurized water reactor with a tight fuel lattice.
