The Education, Training & Workforce Development Division provides communication among the academic, industrial, and governmental communities through the exchange of views and information on matters related to education, training and workforce development in nuclear and radiological science, engineering, and technology. Industry leaders, education and training professionals, and interested students work together through Society-sponsored meetings and publications, to enrich their professional development, to educate the general public, and to advance nuclear and radiological science and engineering.

Framatome, Ultra Safe partner to manufacture TRISO and FCM fuel
Framatome and Ultra Safe Nuclear announced on January 26 that they intend to form a joint venture to manufacture commercial quantities of tristructural isotropic (TRISO) particles and Ultra Safe’s proprietary fully ceramic microencapsulated (FCM) fuel.
The companies have signed a nonbinding agreement to integrate their resources to bring commercially viable, fourth-generation nuclear fuel to market for Ultra Safe’s micro-modular reactor (MMR) and other advanced reactor designs.

Two commercially available platinum plating solutions (Platanex III and Platanex Luna) were evaluated for the electrodeposition of platinum layers on gold hohlraums and cylindrically shaped silver-gold ingots. The successful deposition of thin Pt layers on gold hohlraums as well as thick Pt layers on silver-gold alloys will allow for the integration of atomic layer deposition templated foam inside a hohlraum. It was found that when the manufacturer’s recommendations for the Pt plating solutions were used, the coatings obtained were unacceptable because of cracking, poor adhesion, or thin and powdery Pt deposits. Therefore, alternative plating parameters were investigated, and the conditions resulting in acceptable coatings are reported here.
