ORNL, INL make deals on AI for nuclear licensing
The United States has tight new deadlines—18 months, max—for licensing commercial reactor designs. The Department of Energy is marshaling the nuclear expertise and high-performance computing assets of its national laboratories, in partnership with private tech companies, to develop generative AI tools and large-scale simulations that could help get nuclear reactor designs through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s licensing process—or the DOE’s own reactor pilot program. “Accelerate” and “streamline” are the verbs of choice in recent announcements from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory, as they describe plans with Atomic Canyon, Microsoft, and Amazon.

Digital upgrades are moving forward through the conceptual to design and licensing for both non-safety and safety systems in operating reactors around the world. This session will focus on the challenges and opportunities for expanding these upgrades and the associated system selection, cost-benefit analysis, streamlined licensing and benefits to operating staff. Speakers from NRC, national labs, operating utilities, NEI, vendors and international will provide a short overview from their respective viewpoints. Key areas such as optimization of licensing using NRC Interim Staff Guidance ISG-06, Rev 2 as well as the latest EPRI guidance will also be addressed.
