Going Nuclear: Notes from the officially unofficial book tour
I work in the analytical labs at one of Europe’s oldest and largest nuclear sites: Sellafield, in northwestern England. I spend my days at the fume hood front, pipette in one hand and radiation probe in the other (and dosimeter pinned to my chest, of course). Outside the lab, I have a second job: I moonlight as a writer and public speaker. My new popular science book—Going Nuclear: How the Atom Will Save the World—came out last summer, and it feels like my life has been running at full power ever since.

Frank Helin is currently the Executive Project Director for the Decommissioning of TMI-2 with TMI2Solutions. Frank has an extensive nuclear resume, most recently as the President & General Manager of Energy Steel. Energy Steel is a custom fabricator of mechanical components serving the nuclear industry exclusively.
Frank began his nuclear career in the United States Navy Nuclear Program serving aboard the fast attack submarine USS Philadelphia (SSN-690). Spending nearly 20 years in nuclear operations at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant (VY) in Vernon, Vermont, where he received his Senior Reactor Operator Certification from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Frank served in many capacities at VY including Reactor Engineering, Outage and Operations Manager.
Frank also spent a number of years with General Electric (GE) in multiple senior roles including leading Reuter-Stokes and Plant Modifications for GE – Hitachi with responsibility for all plant modifications globally.
Before joining Energy Steel, Frank was the Vice President, Project Management for the Babcock & Wilcox (Generation mPower) Small Modular Reactor program. In this role he was responsible for internal projects including technology development and licensing as well as external projects including site characterization and DOE. He has a B.S. from the State University in New York and a M.S. degree in Engineering Management from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
