DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.
International High Level Radioactive Waste Management (IHLRWM 2025)
Amanda Shafer is the Senior Legislative Assistant for Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49). In this role, Amanda handles a range of issues related to energy, environment, and climate change. She leads Rep. Levin’s work on spent nuclear fuel, including the bipartisan Spent Nuclear Fuel Solutions Caucus, co-chaired by Rep. Levin and Rep. Fleischmann.
Before joining Rep. Levin’s office, Amanda worked as a Legislative Assistant for Rep. Casten (IL-06). Prior to working in Congress, she worked at a nonprofit focused on mobilizing young people to support a healthy civic society and democracy.
Amanda graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and grew up in the Chicagoland area.
