ORNL–General Atomics partnership on ceramic matrix composites
A memorandum of understanding has been signed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) with the objective of working together on advanced ceramic matrix composite materials for applications in extreme environments. Materials that can withstand extreme temperatures, radiation, corrosion, and mechanical stress are required in aerospace, defense, energy, and other sectors.
According to the agreement, the San Diego–based GA-EMS will use resources from ORNL’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility to develop “scalable, efficient manufacturing techniques for extreme environment materials including precursors, fibers, composites, and coatings utilized in carbon/carbon (C/C), carbon/silicon carbide (C/SiC), and SiC/SiC composite systems.”

The deployment of advanced nuclear technologies increasingly depends on high-fidelity testing environments that bridge the gap between conceptual design and real-world performance. This panel discussion examines the transformative impact of cutting-edge facilities, such as the European Spallation Source (ESS) and advanced research and test reactors, in enabling the rapid development and deployment of next-generation nuclear technologies. These platforms provide critical capabilities for materials testing, neutron science, and reactor prototyping, turning innovative designs into practical solutions like small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced fission systems. Featuring experts from academia and industry, the panel highlights collaborative efforts to advance safety, efficiency, and scalability in nuclear energy. The panel offers insights into how these facilities are paving the way for a sustainable and innovative nuclear future worldwide. Panelists will explore how these facilities enable key milestones in fuel qualification, materials research, and system validation, while driving partnerships between academia, industry, and government. Together, they offer a glimpse into how strategic infrastructure investments are shaping the next era of nuclear energy technologies.
