Going Nuclear: Notes from the officially unofficial book tour
I work in the analytical labs at one of Europe’s oldest and largest nuclear sites: Sellafield, in northwestern England. I spend my days at the fume hood front, pipette in one hand and radiation probe in the other (and dosimeter pinned to my chest, of course). Outside the lab, I have a second job: I moonlight as a writer and public speaker. My new popular science book—Going Nuclear: How the Atom Will Save the World—came out last summer, and it feels like my life has been running at full power ever since.
Young Professionals Congress
Technical Session|Panel
Saturday, November 8, 2025|8:50–10:00AM EST|Columbia 9
Successful siting of nuclear facilities relies not only on technical excellence but also on meaningful collaboration with local communities. This panel brings together experts and practitioners to discuss best practices and real-world experiences in community engagement and collaboration-based siting. Panelists will explore strategies for fostering open dialogue, addressing community concerns, and building long-term partnerships that support project success. Attendees will gain insights into effective engagement models, lessons learned from recent projects, and the evolving role of transparency and trust in the siting process. Join us for a dynamic conversation on how young professionals can help strengthen relationships between the nuclear sector and the communities it serves.
