DTRA’s advancements in nuclear and radiological detection
A new, more complex nuclear age has begun. Echoing the tensions of the Cold War amid rapidly evolving nuclear and radiological threats, preparedness in the modern age is a contest of scientific innovation. The Research and Development Directorate (RD) at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is charged with winning this contest.

Clemson University, a leading public land-grant institution in Upstate South Carolina, impacts local and global communities through education, research, and service. Its Nuclear Environmental Engineering and Science graduate program (est. 1980) and Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences minor (est. 2015) prepare students for the nuclear workforce. Clemson’s Center for Nuclear Environmental Engineering Sciences and Radioactive Waste Management (NEESRWM) and DOE-funded Nuclear Waste Dialogue (NuWaDi) Consortium foster collaborative nuclear research and public engagement.
