ANS is committed to advancing, fostering, and promoting the development and application of nuclear sciences and technologies to benefit society.
Explore the many uses for nuclear science and its impact on energy, the environment, healthcare, food, and more.
Division Spotlight
Thermal Hydraulics
The division provides a forum for focused technical dialogue on thermal hydraulic technology in the nuclear industry. Specifically, this will include heat transfer and fluid mechanics involved in the utilization of nuclear energy. It is intended to attract the highest quality of theoretical and experimental work to ANS, including research on basic phenomena and application to nuclear system design.

Arizona utilities trio looks to add nuclear power
The top three utilities in Arizona are teaming up to explore opportunities to add nuclear generation facilities in the state.
Arizona Public Service (APS), Salt River Project (SRP), and Tucson Electric Power (TEP) announced in a February 5 news release that they are working together to assess possible sites, including retiring coal plants. The group is looking at possibilities for both small modular reactors—units generating 300 MW or less—and potential large reactor projects, which could generate nearly five times the power.
Educational Session|Panel|Sponsored by Cost Reduction Opportunities
Monday, August 5, 2024|9:30–11:00AM EDT|Calusa 11/12
The Cost Reduction Opportunities Track will explore Industry cost trends and analysis in O&M, Capital & Staffing with areas for specific cost reduction opportunities. The track continues with insights into current Nuclear Life Extension initiatives with key fleet operators. Next on our track agenda is a discussion of Risk Informed Initiatives in Fire Protection, Surveillance Requirements and others. We continue with a regularoty update, new tools and techniques used in security and radiation areas and application of automated devices. Next, we analyze federal incentive programs and their applications and innovative cost saving strategies including Integrated Operations. Lastly, we have a fascinating presentation of cost savings by the Norway North Sea Oil and Gas Corporations.
This first session will present an indepth analysis of industry cost and staffing data, identifying key trends and best practices in O&M and Capital spending reductions plus insights into staffing optimizations across the nuclear enterprise. Relationships between cost performance quartiles and actual cost reductions will be examined.
