Jefferson Lab awarded $8M for accelerator technology to enable transmutation
The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is leading research supported by two Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E) grants aimed at developing accelerator technology to enable nuclear waste recycling, decreasing the half-life of spent nuclear fuel.
Both grants, totaling $8.17 million in combined funding, were awarded through the Nuclear Energy Waste Transmutation Optimized Now (NEWTON) program, which aims to enable the transmutation of nuclear fuels by funding novel technologies for improving the performance of particle generation systems.

1958: Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College, London.
1964: Received doctorate in Nuclear Engineering from MIT. Joined General Electric Company.
1967: Assigned by GE to study use of probability in nuclear power plant safety.
1969: Author of 2 Proprietary GE reports and paper in ANS Transactions on safety goals and probabilistic analysis of NPPs.
1974: NRC’s Office of Research. Lead revision of RSS consequence model, Appendix VI of WASH -1400.
1979-1990: EPRI. Organized Risk Assessment Program, which managed research supporting L1 and L2 PRAs, including seismic.
1999-2023: Member of ASME/ANS Joint Committee on Nuclear Risk Management.
