Deep geologic repository progress—2025 Update

Outside my office, there is a display case filled with rock samples from all over the world. It contains a disk of translucent, orange salt from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, N.M.; a core of white-and-bronze gneiss from the site of the future deep geologic repository in Eurajoki, Finland; several angular chunks of fine-grained, gray claystone from the underground research laboratory at Bure, France; and a piece of coarse-grained granite from the underground research tunnel in Daejeon, South Korea.

Ali Mosleh is a UCLA Distinguished University Professor, and Evalyn Knight Endowed Chair in Engineering. He is also the Inaugural Director of the UCLA Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences. Prior to joining UCLA in 2014 he was the Nicole J. Kim Eminent Professor in Reliability Engineering and the Director of the Center for Risk and Reliability at the University of Maryland. He conducts research on methods for probabilistic risk analysis and reliability of complex systems, holds several patents, and has edited, authored, or co-authored over 800 publications. He was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 2010, is a Fellow of the Society for Risk Analysis, the American Nuclear Society, and IEEE. He is recipient of several scientific achievement awards, and has served as technical advisor to numerous national and international organizations.
